Creating an Extra Hour in your Day – Step 4 Part 1 Creating an Extra Hour in your Day – Step 4 Part 1 If you fail to plan you plan to fail. Step 4 in creating an extra hour a day (email me for the 7 steps michael@timecreationcoaching.com.au) is knowing what you DO with your time and what you are thinking when you do it. Today we will focus on what you DO! Do you know where your time goes? Do you know what your top priorities are? Knowing what you do with your time is about using “self-management” tools that suit your personal style to be more effective. A great starting point is tracking your time. In our coaching program our clients track their time for a few weeks. Interestingly most people know that a lot time is spent on “low impact” tasks and the tracking confirms this. The clarity of the tracking provides a solid foundation to move forward. Now they know what is happening they get much clearer on what needs to change. So then the question comes “how do I change?” We’ll firstly we go back to step 1. Are you ready to take responsibility for your results, including how you spend your time? Yes. OK. Now, from step 2, are you really clear on what you want? Yes. OK. Now break down one of your goals for this year in to about 5 steps. Focus on the first step. Break it down in to manageable chunks. What specifically do you want to achieve this week for this step? Next ask what needs to happen to make sure I will spend my time on this task (rather than be distracted). This is where you “stock-take” any “self-management” (aka time management) tools you may use. Decide what 2 tools work for you and use them. If you are unsure of what works for you I suggest talking to a coach or at very least reading Steven Covey’s book The Seven Habit of Highly Effective People. Go easy on yourself. Changing your habits takes time. What you are aiming to do is build momentum and improve each week. Observe what works well. Notice what is not working and acknowledge that noticing is an improvement – it is better than just reacting to what happens. In our coaching program we constantly see the 80-20 rule applies. 20% of the things you do create 80% of the results. This 20% usually requires you to be proactive not reactive. Step 4, knowing what you DO, is about making sure the KEY 20% gets done! Michael Erwin is a Time Creation Coach who helps managers and sales people eliminate procrastination. His clients, include Channel 9, Coles Myer, and Hoskins Wallace Real Estate, have improved effectiveness by up to 50% and increased sales by as much as 70%.
