Creating an Extra Hour in your Day – Step 3 Part 2

Creating an Extra Hour in your Day – Step 3 Part 2
By Michael Erwin

Step 3 in creating an extra hour a day (email me for the 7 steps michael@timecreationcoaching.com.au) is about crossing the GAP between what you know and what you consistently do.

There are two key aspects to this. The first is that all of us prefer to stay in our comfort zone, which we spoke last month. The second is most of what blocks us is below the surface. So let’s look below the surface.

Imagine you are looking at an iceberg and you can see what is above and below the surface. Less than one third is above the water. The same applies to the blocks we all have that stop us moving forward as quickly as we would like.

Going below the surface is a critical element of our coaching. No lasting change occurs unless you address the underlying cause of your blocks and habits. Under the surface are values, beliefs and your mental programming.

Recently I was working with a senior manager who loved to “wing it”. He was great at “winging it” most of the time. But people knew (and so did he) that he would let them down at some point. Forget an appointment. Run late. Leave critical information behind. For this guy, “winging it” gave him a huge adrenalin rush, BUT it was also hugely stressful leading up to the event or appointment. So we went below the surface and found some interesting programming.

“I think being organised is “anal” and boring!” he said. So we put this belief to the test. The Outcome was – all the really successful people he knew where between highly organised and organised. AND none of them were anal or boring! From that session on there was a HUGE difference – he was much more open to being “organised” and his behaviour changed too.

So how do you “go below the surface? Here are some action steps for oyu:
Schedule some “non-negotiable” time to go beneath the surface. Get out of the office. Take a minute to set aside all the things that are happening in your life. Ask yourself “what is stopping me getting what I want?” Then ask what else? Ask again, what else? Ask, what thoughts are going through your head about these blocks? The repeat the process and see what comes up from below the surface.
